6 of the best

I know from my own experiences of formal corporal punishment that the number of strokes given varies enormously. It seems to me in private schools the old fashioned 6 of the best is much more likely to be awarded. In the state sector the usual amount was 2 usually on the hand but sometimes on the clothed seat.As a child i was mainly educated within the state sector but i did spend 3 years at a prep school where canings were invariably 6 of the best. Perhaps because of the past traditions of such schools; ie preparing boys for the empire,to be leaders of men etc, discipline is harsher.

I’d love to know where the term “of the best” comes from and, more to the point, what it actually means.

My assumption is that it means “applied with the maximum permissible force” but, in that case, wouldn’t six ‘of the worst’ be more appropriate?

Anyone any ideas?

You’re pretty much correct on what it means – six of the best basically means six strokes intended to be as painful as possible, but I have no idea where it comes from originally. It seems to have been in use a fairly long time.

I suppose is best from view point of teacher, but for the pupil is six of the worst.

My apologies if there has been any confusion.

You will no doubt have noted that on 05 May 2018 @ 10:09 in the thread above Manager of the Featured, a senior member of this estimable Forum’s Management Team, stated that you have also posted under the names 23C and pcfortynine. The person who posted under those names also used the name *ik** (the asterisks represent letters I have omitted to display,  was a fairly long-standing contributor, had attended a a school even more venerable and ancient than mine (jealousy! ) and, like many of us here, had an academic interest in the disciplining of naughty schoolgirls in those times and places where that might involve bending over and the cane.

However you say that you are not that individual.  That surprises me, as our Management Team are seldom if ever wrong, and have access to identity related data not accessible to ordinary contributors like you and I.  However in the confusion and chaos that the transfer from Network54 to Tapatalk has inflicted on the Forum who can tell what past records may have been corrupted?  Certainly there is probably scope for potential misunderstandings of this sort.

Should you wish for further clarification and explanation an examination of the page of the ‘Women’ thread here may be of benefit.  It contains both the two most recent contributions that I can positively identify from the individual I believed you to be and my response to the latter of these.

And on another matter entirely.  You clearly must have had an interest in the topic ‘6 of the best’ to discover and reopen such an ancient thread.  Have you had experience of being in receipt of that formidable corporal punishment, or indeed of lesser canings?  I fear that I haven’t, my own personal  SCP tally amounts only to a smacked leg and a slippering at primary school.  However like the vast majority of our readers and contributors I am an avid consumer of the SCP experiences of others and any details of such matters that you are able and inclined to post will certainly be of interest.

hi,   thank you for detailed reply.  I looked at the woman’s thread and cannot identify contents to anything I submitted.   But no matter,  and somewhere some one commented does not matter if contributor is real or not, is contents of article that matter.  I, like you, find these fascinating, no doubt because not had serious caning punishment at school, just few on hands.
Incidentally recently comment about Lucy Buckinham, and a photo arose.  I had been in email contact over years and recently, yes still same email address.  My sense is she is very much real,  the photograph not from her.  But as I mailed to her, at least the photo is good one.   Not heard back from her since.
So keep up the good work.  Pity about the transition problems.
