Certainly there were some tears. At the time, though, it was a common punishment especially at home up to age 14 or so. I got one spanking at primary school, from one of the two male teachers. Mainly it was the female teachers doing the spanking. Yes, both spankings I received were over the seat of my short trousers. Oddly, I never realised that all the spankings I saw done on underpants or knickers were carried out by female teachers. It’s a long time ago now, but I think as far as the primary school goes the two male teachers were almost the only ones who didn’t spank on underwear.

Bearing in mind the female teachers here were all primary school teachers, I believe they did this simply to increase the power of the smack. Back then it never for one moment would have been considered inappropriate for a female teacher to see a child of either sex totally naked, whereas a male teacher might have been on slightly less firm ground. But then, it was okay for adults of either sex to see children of either sex in their underwear, so maybe I’m defeating my own argument.

In secondary school (all boys grammar school) we had mostly male staff with just one female teacher (a youngish Belgian lady) who used the slipper, and only over trousers.

I suppose that in days past people simply accepted that men’s roles in life and women’s roles were quite different. In primary school, I don’t think there would have been a problem with a male teacher spanking a female pupil on the seat of her knickers – bare bottom might have been different, I don’t know, maybe not. You may have further questions from other contributors so my apologies for adding to your query burden.  However I was intrigued when you said above:

Were these mixed classes please?  If boys were caned by the Headmaster was this done away from the classroom?  If so did boys view a caning as better than the possible alternative?

Since if punished in class by the Headmistress on the same basis as the unfortunate girls this latter  would have involved the considerable indignity of being bent over the desk, having trousers taken  down and being subjected to the DDD¹ to bare a substantial area of buttock cheeks for slaps the cane might well have seemed preferable!
