Hello, Members
I found this in one of my non-school CP files today (‘Workplace file’).
It’s the case of Salvation Army officer, Martin Hale, who was spanking girls on their bare bottoms.
It’s from The News of the Word (DATE: April 23 2000).
It’s a long time since this one has been out of my files, and my search today began when I  was looking for my ‘Thomas Carlton School’ FR refs, which I failed to do!
Anyway, here is a copy of it.
Any thoughts?  Regularly spanking girls bottoms in any organisation leaves you as a sitting duck in the end. Martin Howe must have been very convincing to persuade these girls to drop their trousers and underwear. Either that or the girls were quite vulnerable, or maybe very stupid.
Without saying anymore, have a read and I look forward to your thoughts.
Best wishes,
Paul.

Hi Paul, The correct spelling is Thomas CALTON but I think there were two FR pages ones spelt correctly and one incorrectly.

The Salvation Army has had a Safeguading policy for many years and an appointed person to investigate cases such as this. Without knowing all the facts its difficult to comment. A suspension would of course be the first action

This man is a disgrace to the Salvation Army. I have no connection with the organisation but it is world renowned for its good work. One ‘bad apple in the barrel’ is nothing compared to what we have heard of the mental, physical and sexual of boys and girls by members of the world’s largest Christian church. Without more knowledge of this case it is difficult to comment more but what were the parents thinking allowing a man to do ‘bible readings’ to a teenage girl alone in her bedroom?

As you will guess I am a member and I would confirm that the rules state that unless you are a family member you must not be alone with a child of either sex at any time.
This does not mmean it does not happen but it would certainly be frowned upon. I would ask what the girls parents were doing allowing it to happen I feel there is a lot more to this story than what the newspaper is saying.

As you will have gathered I greatly admire the work of the Salvation Army. I presume that the SA now have to check out all their officers by using the DBS method, this is free to charities but it only reveals those with some sort of previous conviction or a warning even. All youth organisations and schools use it too. Your right about questioning the parents allowing it. Could it have been that the first few girls had spankings from their parents before he did it and therefore accepted it as more or less ‘normal’? I’m sure there were many parents back then who were Salvationists that used spanking on their children at home if it was deserved. That of course doesn’t make what that man did as right, far from it.

Thank you, Batfinch,
Yes, one should never find themselves alone in any organisation that teaches, coaches or has children within its ranks.

At the time of this incident, regulation was not as tight. There wasn’t the child protection laws we have now, nor the CRB checks.
You confirm that there is a safeguarding policy in place within the SA, as is the case in schools, care homes, children’s homes and organisations like UK Athletics and the LTA. I think with recent events, the F.A need to get up to speed!
THE SA do such great work and at the time of this incident, it would have raised many a question.
Thank you so much, Batfinch

Six of The Best, hello,
Thank you.
You are correct, where on earth were the parents in these cases? it would never happen today. I think the recent church scandals will finally put the lid on this kind of behavior.
Many thanks,. both
Paul
