At my school there were teachers who used to send disruptive pupils outside of the classroom until the end of the lesson. One of the risks for such pupils was that one of the three senior teachers  (Headmaster, Deputy Headmaster and Senior Mistress) might be doing a patrol and discover you.

Any pupils found outside the classroom were asked why they were there. If it was for bad behaviour then you would be sent to wait outside the senior teacher’s office. When the senior teacher returned to their office a caning was the result for any pupils waiting.

I found this out in my first year when I got six of the best from the Senior Mistress for being cheeky to a lady teacher.

It appeared to me that some teachers who did not like giving out detentions or caning pupils used the tactic of sending naughty pupils out of the class to avoid having to punish the pupil themselves.

Did any other schools have senior teacher patrols?

At my school PE teachers were responsible for maintaining order during break times. If a boy transgressed and was caught a prefect or even another teacher would send him to the PE master who was on duty that day. Depending on the gravity of the offence a slippering would invariably be the outcome. This involved the miscreant being required to change into thin PE shorts and being given between 2 and 6 full force wallops across the backside from a well worn plimsoll. There weren’t many occasions when  offences were repeated.

There is something about being stripped down to PE shorts that adds to the punishment. Total control.

True and it hurts more as well.

Something similar happened at my all boys grammar school. If you were sent out of class it was very risky being on the corridor. It was unlikely the head would happen by but the deputy head often prowled the school and you would end up outside his office, hands on head, facing the wall, knowing you were in for a bottom roasting with his strap.  Other senior staff would intervene if the teacher was young or inexperienced and you could be slippered there and then. So it was always a nervewracking experience being sent out.
