Hi Koboo,
Interesting points. I can’t help junior/senior canes : on my school there were two sizes, the smaller were used for the prep school (8 upwards in those days), and the junior forms in the main school. At about 14 or thereabouts they changed to using the larger cane.I never got the cane until the fifth form so graduated straight to the big one !
As to the position of the cuts, my first caning by the deputy head ( female) the stroked were low , essentially spread in the lower 1/3 or so of the bottom. I believe she hit here because of her training in the States, where you would hit low with the paddle to avoid damage to the tail bone which is a real risk with a ‘plank’ of wood.
My second caning from the Headmaster started higher ( this was six of the best) , and finished by him also moving into the lower segment . The first stroke was a sort of boundary line and then he went lower each time .
Hope that helps

Hi Kooboo.
I do believe that if you read of Dr Dominums preffered caning method,he laid the first stroke for a six of the best caning for example, straight across the center line of the bottom then caned progressively tight below it.
Hope this will help.

My own experience was three well spaced starting at the centre. Immediately afterward the “centre” stroke was red before going a dull blue, whilst the two lower strokes had a bluish tinge and tramlines. From shower room evidence the Head was not above giving a slash on the thighs which bruised immediately.
Whilst I was entering the 6th a new Head arrived. I never saw his work but he apparently was quite adept with low strokes and particularly.
My ex- told me that her three strokes (in a Yorkshire Comp) consisted of two fairly central strokes followed by a much harder angled lower stroke such that the third mark was visible on her right leg when she lifted her skirt to show her friends.

Nearly every
head that has caned a boy will say the “correct/safest” area to cane is in the middle of the bottom.
Strokes high up on the bottom can cause spine damage. If they do not actually cause bodily harm as their is so little flesh the strokes leave the most horrific marks. Strokes to the lower part of the bottom are safe but strokes here are far more painful than those to the centre of the bottom as the nwerve endings (receptore) are for more receptive. In addition these lower strokes land right across the area on which a boy sits and so will find it very hard to sit down properly after having a few strokes in this area. Also, if short trousers were worn the weal mark may be seen below these. With these low strokes even if the boy tries to sit on the side of his bottom he feels considerable discomfort in doing so for a couple of days. These low strokes were mainly used to land the last stroke to make it something the boy will remember. of course some low strokes were by pure accident. the correct place for normal caning is right across the centre of the bottom, with the cane landing flat across both buttocks at the same time and not tip first which cut into the bottom. The cane when it landed, be it on clothing or bare made a much sharper sound than the strokes that were high or low. Most of the high strokes were caused more by accident than desgn and cause by the caner bringing the cane down from high in the air and getting it to land at an angle of about 45 degrees. with it landing like this, while not meaning the very top of the bottom/lower back is hit it will certainly land on the top third of the bottom. strokes that land on the center of the bottom or the lower part are administered with more of a sideways swing with the cane striking the bottom at 90 degrees.

Modern bottoms tend to be much larger and better padded than in the old days. Sometimes, I am shocked when I see boys of the age, size and physique that were once much caned here in the blighted land where girls were not caned. The cane seems far too harsh to have been used on such little kids.
We boys had quite strong views on the proper target and had a low opinion of teachers whose aim was poor. I recall no one complaining about excessive force but they certainly did complain about strokes delivered to the thighs or lower back (and “unfair” canings).
The lower half of the cheeks were considered to be the proper target. These are inacessible to diagonally downward strokes unless a standing recipent is leaning well forward supported by a desk or chair. Even then, the target is rather narrow, perhaps 5 cm wide?

Kooboo, there isn’t much I can add to what has been written except to say that your description of what you felt is exactly what I would have expected.
Not only does a thin cane cause a sharper sting than a thicker one, the upper part of the buttock contains some very sensitive spots (you can find these for yourself if you apply pressure with a blunt object such as the end of a pencil). When struck, the effect is similar to knocking your elbow – almost an electric shock sensation. Although such punishments are extremely painful at the time, the discomfort is not usually long lasting, even though the marks remain.
A thick cane applied lower down tends to bruise more and raises more prominent weals. Though still quite painful enough(!), the pain isn’t quite as sharp as with a thin cane, but the area remains sore for longer.
I doubt your headmaster would have targeted the upper area deliberately, it was probably that you were not as tall when you were caned the first time.

Agree with all that has gone before. Just to add two points:
– In days gone by, I suspect that trousers were of a heavier duty than the flimsy, throw away fabrics we have today and even back in the 1970’s. The level of protection from clothing in the 1970-1980’s was, I suspect much less than that in the 1940-50’s – This is speculation as I was not around in the 40’s to 50’s so appreciate anyone with knowledge as to whether this was the case.
– The risk of strokes going astray is why so many administers of corporal punishment would have the pupil bend over an object, often selected to present the target at a convenient height for them, rather than a comfortable height for the victim to bend over. Also they would wait and instruct the pupil to keep still, not, I suspect, so that they could inflict a harder stroke, but to minimise the risk of the cane striking in an inappropriate location.
One of the senior masters at my school had a peculiar caning action, in that he kept his cane arm straight throughout, rather like wielding a baseball bat one-handed. He made no effort to incorporate any wrist action and struck you like he was trying to knock you off your feet. His strokes tended to be a bit wild. As others have said not a lot of sting but very deep bruising that ached for significantly longer than a caning from either the Headmaster or the other senior master. He also used to breathe (practically wheeze) very heavily while caning and many of us thought he derived too much pleasure from giving out the beatings.
Regards
M.W.

i see your point hcj, i was not very tall at 12 , in fact i was quite small and the headmaster was not a large chap but certainly taller than me, i remember having to look up to him during my lecture. he would himself have to bend to deliver the strokes. i was never given an object to bend over, ie a chair or desk , it was always hands on the knees, but had to bend right over so my bottom was prominent. the cane though, did still land on the top of my bottom but very even strokes as if thats where he intended them to land. he had a small office and i always had to face the door and bend over, his furniture was spaced out so that he could get a good even swing at a low level. his desk was in front of the window which was a large window so the room was bright but private as it backed on to a car park with a bush growing for more privicey. there was no need to draw curtains or blinds. as for trousers i wore during those years, well…they were very thin and certainly offered no protection, this was the 1970s and they had no back pockets but pockets on the sides of the legs lower down , where we used to keep pen pencil and ruler. i would be sure if these trousers were held up to the light they would be see through, and underpants were just as thin. the trousers also had a wide 3 button waist band. around the waist and bottom they were tight so when bent over they would have been even tighter. when bent over the light from the window would have gave a good view of my bottom so would have been impossible to put padding there without being caught out. as i have said i had to bend right over so the cloth would have moulded into the shape of my bottom. it wouldent have surprised me if he could have seen through them due to the light from the window.he had a reputation of being a good caner although not very often gave out 6 of the best, mainy 2 or 3s but they certainly stung and i did my best to avoid further canings, with no success….

The headmaster at my senior school certainly did deliberately hit high and low, the most common complaint after a caning was ‘he didn’t whack me on the bottom’. Mostly he gave junior boys two strokes and older boys four, sometimes six for serious offences
The first boy to be caned in our class, aged 10, got two across the seat of his shorts, one really high and one on the crease between buttocks and legs. He cried. If you got four it was two very high up which really hurt and as kooboo said made you feel sick, one on the sit spot or a bit lower and one on the crease.
Regarding thickness of material the school was very specific about trousers/shorts. Two types were available, wool-rich flannel which were rough, thicker, and a lighter shade of grey; and darker, thinner, smoother ones. The latter were the only ones permitted and I often wonder if it was because the cane would hurt more in them. Also the seat quickly went shiny through sitting on the polished wooden chairs because of the high nylon content and it was said that this also made the cane hurt more, as it made better contact on smooth shiny fabric.

I got the cane at school twice, 3 strokes both times.
When I looked at the marks the strokes had left afterwards they were spread out over my backside. But at the time of actually getting the cane I wasn’t aware that a stroke was high or low or across the middle – each time it just seemed to make my whole bottom hurt at once.

My father would cane by first of all aiming at the top of the area he wanted to cane and then the bottom. Once these two strokes were delivered he would proceed to lay the remaining ones in between the two markers.

It was a long long time ago I was caned at school but from I remember the cane strokes tended to land middle of bottom and lower—some really quite low which made it worse sitting down afterwards

To add further detail.
1. Age 8 – Slipper introduced (white plimsol) on Saturday mornings. I changed into a pair of pyjamas he kept in his wardrobe for me to wear. Later on slipperings would involve a heavier gymshoe (blue dap)
2. Age 11- Cane introduced – he had several which he kept in his wardrobe – I’d be bent over some pillows on the bed or made to bend over holding one of the drawers of the wardrobe
During the punishments he would usually be wearing his silk dressing gown – I now wear it.

When I got the cane at school I couldn’t tell where it had hit – my whole bottom exploded with pain at each stroke. It was only when I saw my bottom afterwards and felt the marks that I knew where the strokes had actually landed.

I totally agree Steve! Generally cane strokes were across the middle of the bottom. Only inexperienced teachers or if the lad moved when taking it hit higher or lower.

That is my experience. At the time of being caned, I think it was probably the pain in general that filled my thoughts, not exactly how it was being arranged. Later examination showed how the cane landed – middle to lower in my case.

I agree! As someone said here previously lads in the 50s and 60s tended to be somewhat thinner than modern youngsters. More exercise and less fast food perhaps. Difficult to quite define where the ‘middle’ started and finished.
Many girls had ‘fleshier’ bottoms but only small minority of them compared to boys were caned across the bottom. Slippering for girls did happen in some schools back then and from many parents. All a long time ago now!

When I looked at my cane welts in the mirror they were never higher than the middle of my buttocks
