All sorts of people and religious groups have twisted the word of the gospels to seem to conform to and to confirm whatever agenda that indiviual or group hold close to their heart.

Read the gospels (in case you’re confused as to which part of the Bible constitues the gospels, they are the four first-person narrative accounts of the life and times of Jesus written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in the New Testament – not to be confused with the Old Testament, in which all sorts of depravity and tomfoolery are espoused, from vengeful cruelty to murder to killing your own son because you think god himself ordered you to do it.)

Let’s leave Jesus out of this subject.

By my previous posting you should know I was ridiculing and not agreeing with them about spanking Jesus. Christian school policies involving saving souls and not helping them learn. Surprisingly there answer to the question on SCP is spot on. Try this link and they have an answer for everything. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I don’t know if Jesus would spank a child, though he would certainly cut off a soldiers ear and use a whip on money changers.

But he was himself spanked as a child according to the old carol “The Bitter Withy”:

1. As it fell out on a holy day,
The drops of rain did fall, did fall,
Our Saviour asked leave of His mother, May,
If He might go play at ball.

2. To play at ball, my own dear Son,
Its time you was going or gone,
But be sure let me hear no complaint of you,
At night when you do come home.

Although I personally am fairly open about having a corporal punishment fetish of my own, and also have a christian faith, I really don’t believe the christian school position is largely to do with fetish at all but from a literalistic view of Bible verses (although unfortunately some normally wise christians choose to know very little about fetish and therefore might not discern a few individuals malign intent towards children masquerading as “following the Bible”.) But to declare that anyone who is not a complete CP abolitionist must perforce be a pervert and sexual predator of children is deeply offensive and hurtful, and regretfully I even find this in adult spankos who would want to distance themselves from anything discussed in this forum.

I tend to sit on the fence on this issue – I don’t think the Bible “commands” spanking children but does expect, as does every sane society, that children are brought up with an awareness that certain antisocial courses of action have unpleasant consequences, and this needs to be brought to bear at least a decade before they become eligible to be sent to jail. Financial loss or curtailment of privileges might do this equally well, of course, but may not always.

Spanking for consenting adults is not for sanctification but gratification but what goes on behold closed doors… That certainly wasn’t the case for the corpulent couple (practice what you preach) listening in the next room at the end of the video.

Deuteronomy 21:18-21

(NEB) When a man has a son who is disobedient and out of control, and will not obey his father or his mother, or pay attention when they punish him, then his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of the town, at the town gate. They shall say to the elders of the town, `This son of ours is disobedient and out of control; he will not obey us, he is a wastrel and a drunkard.` Then all the men of the town shall stone him to death, and you will thereby rid yourselves of this wickedness. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

This seems rather harsh treatment for a 2 year old given to tantrums. Should he really be accused of being a wastrel and a drunkard because he won’t eat his vegetables? And what about girls?

A selective use of the Old Testament continues to this day to justify various religious right philosophies. The Old Testament condones, or expounds as God’s will: genocide, rape of female prisoners of war, slavery, a patriarchal society with women as chattels, death by stoning for adultery and other crimes, the isolation of lepers and other practices that civilised people now find abhorrent. By contrast, the New Testament offers little solace to those who wish to use corporal punishment.
