Corporal punishment survey
Hi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.
Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.
School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.
If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.
Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.
The information I’d love you to provide is the following:
About You:
Gender:
Approximate age when punished:
Approximate year of punishment:
Crime committed or alleged:
About the punishment
Administered by Head, or Staff member:
Gender of staff member:
Location punished (Classroom, Office, Hallway etc):
Type of punishment (Cane,Slipper,Paddle etc):
Number of strokes:
Applied to (Hand, Bottom, Legs etc):
Position adopted (Standing, Bending over Chair, Desk etc):
State of dress (Over Trousers/Skirt, panties, bare etc):
Privacy (In private, In front of Class, With another teacher etc):
About the school
Name of School:
Town:
Country:
Effectiveness
Were you ever punished again for the same offence?:
Do you consider the punishment effective?:
Any other relevant info:
Many thanks for your participation. I will reply to this post myself with the details of the CP I received.
Note: I see no reason why schools should not be named as they were operating completely within the law.
Hi Allison
It was a stupid dare I didn’t even want to do. I had gotten made fun of for being chicken the day before when I tried to get out of having to shower after PE class, so the next day when my friends were daring me to be cool and prove I wasn’t chicken in this instance, I went for it. Unfortunately the bus driver found out when other kids told on me. It hurt like the dickens.
Five swats delivered over a skirt does sound very painful. Were you in tears afterwards?
Were you given the option of an alternative punishment, maybe a suspension for example, rather than taking the paddling? I’m in the UK so I have no direct experience of US high schools, but I get the impression that alternatives to paddling were usually offered to students, especially if it was going to be a severe paddling. Also, did your parents have to agree that you could be paddled on that occasion, or had they previously agreed that you could be paddled if it was considered appropriate?
Did you get another punishment from your parents afterwards or did they think you’d been punished sufficiently?

YES, I WAS. I WAS ACTUALLY FIGHTING BACK TEARS BEFORE IT EVEN STARTED, SO I WAS CRYING FREELY BY THE HALFWAY POINT
Were you given the option of an alternative punishment, maybe a suspension for example, rather than taking the paddling?
NOT REALLY. WHILE MY SCHOOL WASN’T PADDLE HAPPY, IT WAS COMMON ENOUGH THAT IT WASN’T CONSIDERED THIS MASSIVE THING THE SCHOOL HAD DECIDED TO DO. IF I HAD REFUSED, IM GUESSING IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A SUSPENSION. THEY WOULDN’T HAVE HELD ME DOWN OR ANYTHING LOL. SO IN THAT WAY, I GUESS IT WAS A CHOICE. BUT IT NEVER WOULD HAVE BEEN PRESENTED IN THOSE WAYS. PLUS IF MY PARENTS KNEW I HAD GOTTEN SUSPENDED AS A MEANS OF AVOIDING A PADDLING I HAD EARNED—I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A THUMPING THE SECOND I GOT HOME ANYWAY…..SO NO REAL ADVANTAGE THERE
Also, did your parents have to agree that you could be paddled on that occasion, or had they previously agreed that you could be paddled if it was considered appropriate?
NOT SPECIFICALLY, BUT A FORM WAS SENT HOME AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH YEAR. MOST SIGNED IT (THIS WAS MISSISSIPPI AFTER ALL), BUT IF YOUR PARENTS DIDN’T, THEN YOU WOULD GET ALTERNATIVE PUNISHMENT
Did you get another punishment from your parents afterwards or did they think you’d been punished sufficiently?
FOR THE SWEARING, I JUST GOT A TALKING TO. FOR THE FLASHING INCIDENT I GOT A MAJOR GROUNDING. I THINK IN BOTH INSTANCES MY MOM FELT I HAD ALREADY GOTTEN SPANKED, SO SHE WASN’T THE TYPE TO GIVE YOU A SECOND THUMPING. DIDN’T MEAN YOU MIGHT NOT GET A SECOND PUNISHMENT AT HOME, BUT YOU WEREN’T LIKELY TO GET BUSTED AGAIN.
Sorry for the ALL CAPS, but I didn’t know how else to differentiate my answers from your questions

Hi Allison
We usually put quotes for the post we’re replying to in italics. You can do this by enclosing the quote in <i> and </i> HTML tags like this –
<i>Text to be quoted.</i> which then appears as Text to be quoted.
If you want to indent it too, you can use the <div> </div> tags like this –
<div style=”margin-left:40px;font-style:italic”>Text to be quoted in italics and indented.</div>
You’ll need to check the “Enable formatted text (Huh?)” box at the bottom of the “Respond to this message” screen.
There are a lot of other tips in the Computing Corner thread. You can post IT related questions there if you need any help and one of my most esteemed fellow contributors or I will do our best to assist.

Do you consider the punishment effective?:
Not at the time because I was annoyed and misbehaved again in the afternoon and Miss Jenkins took me to the headmistress again after lessons. I was scolded and told to report to her again in the morning with Miss Jenkins
Any other relevant info:
My headmistress gave me four strokes of the cane the next morning with Miss Jenkins present in the office and I had to spend recess standing in the front right corner of the classroom. Miss Jenkins did not allow me to rub my bottom when I was standing in the corner. In addition to the cane and the recess detention she kept me behind for half an hour for three afternoons to clean the blackboard and tidy the classroom. Miss Jenkins sent me and another boy to the headmistress a couple of months later for flicking small pieces of eraser into a girl’s hair and she caned us giving us 6 strokes each. We had to apologise to the girl upon our return to class.

I was aware it was less frequent outside of the deep south, but I was unaware of HOW less frequent. I had a cousin in Ohio, and her school had the paddle (don’t know if she ever got it), so most of my “outside the deep south” contact worked to shelter me from the reality. I didn’t realize just HOW much of a disparity there was until I went to graduate school (in New York City) and I was the only one who wasn’t adamantly opposed to corporal punishment.
I guess I knew from a young age that they didn’t have it everywhere, and I probably could have pointed at a map (fairly accurately) and picked out what areas it was more likely (essentially the deep south, and the midwest), but I didn’t realize the DEGREE of disparity. Does that make sense?

They also received an extra week each of additional prayer.

Hi hcj. I share your baloneyphobia (excellent word ). However, I’m puzzled by the meagre three strokes. Surely a true fantasist would have opted for 6, especially at 17!
Steve (that’s this Steve, not THE Steve), you have stretched our credulity to the limit. However I am a tad more credulous than my very esteemed fellow contributor hcj. Elements of your story puzzle me, and I don’t mean just the number of strokes! Perhaps you’d care to enlighten me with year, type of school, approximate number of pupils and, ideally but not necessarily, the name of the school. Who knows, you might just convince me!
