One at a time, we were taken (in some cases, dragged) to the teacher who pulled down the boys’ shorts before pulling them across her lap to spank them, while girls had the back of our skirts lifted up after being pulled over her lap. Most got six, but a few got as many as twelve. I think I got six mostly because that was what most got but I don’t remember counting my own.

Any other relevant info: I had to beg to be strapped. We were all equally guilty, we’d divided up the money equally. One boy had avoided being punished by owning up under questioning (I helped deal with his betrayal later) but that lead to four boys being strapped. Girls weren’t supposed to get the strap, so the Principal told us we were going to be suspended for a week instead. I begged him to strap me instead. I told him that if my father found out what I had done, I would get much worse at home and that it was totally unfair and I had been belted in Scotland so I was used to it. He finally gave in to my pleading and I regretted it about half way through, he strapped a lot harder than my teachers in Scotland had and six on one hand was a lot worse than one on each hand. He then asked the other girl if she wanted the same and she said she’d rather be suspended. It all went wrong anyway because the Principal got reported and there was an investigation and my parents found out about that and my father was probably even more severe than me than he would have been in the first place. We were told the Principal was fined a day’s pay, which my father at least tried to give him – he thought the idea that girls shouldn’t be belted when they deserved it thoroughly ridiculous. My father was a very great believer in the idea that sparing the rod, spoiled the child.

We had an emergency teacher that day as a regular teacher was absent for some reason and she had no ability to control a class, and she annoyed us by telling us she was going to keep is all in at lunchtime, so we began making enough noise that our Formmaster became aware of it. He came in and made us all line up and gave each of us two hard whacks on the palm of our hands with a wooden ruler, and told us that if he had to come back, he’d bring his cane. He didn’t have to come back, but I never saw that emergency teacher again.

While I was standing out there, I heard a sound and looked up the corridor to see that the Headmaster had just caned a boy who was also standing outside his classroom. We knew the Headmaster would do this sometimes – it was part of the reason being sent out of the room was such a threat. I went back into the room to ask to be allowed to come in, but the teacher told me to go back outside – I’m sure she knew why I wanted to come back in – and I decided to go to the toilet to avoid the Headmaster. He was waiting outside when I got out and made it very clear he was quite angry that I had tried to escape. I got three on the bottom when I think I would have only got two on the hands otherwise.

Any other relevant info: I had been given a Friday detention. I always hated after school detentions because my father would find out and then he would punish me as well and he would have to drive to the school to pick me up because I would miss the bus home. I think I had got it for not doing homework but I am not really certain and I had already been punished at home. I went to the school library which was where we had detentions and just after I got there the Duty teacher who was supposed to take the detention came in carrying a cane and told us she didn’t have time to deal with a detention this afternoon, so she was going to cane us instead. A couple of people protested but most of us just accepted it. One cut on each hand. One boy, younger than me, tried to argue that he had been given a choice of a detention or one cut and that it was unfair he was going to get two cuts and she ended up grabbing his wrists one at a time and giving him three on each hand for arguing. He was very upset and crying and I ended up taking him down to the toilets and got him to run his hands under the cold water – it was after school and most people had already left. We got caught in the boys toilets together by a Prefect who reported us, so we had to see the Headmaster on Monday, who luckily accepted my explanation of what was going on. One thing about my school is that it had two sites that you had to walk between. We were still at the junior site and the Headmaster was normally at the senior site, so if you were called or sent to see him, you had to walk along a street of shops to get there. I remember being really embarrassed as we walked there on the Monday because he was crying the whole time because he was convinced we were going to get the cane again. People gave us some funny looks, and some were so sympathetic that I think they must have known about what that long walk often meant.

This is all I can remember at the moment. There might have been a couple more times. I remembered more while I was filling this out. I am really quite shocked when I realise how many times I was caned. If I had been asked before writing this, I probably would have said five or six times – it wasn’t that I had forgotten all of it, it just didn’t feel like this many times in my memory. I’m sorry this is so long but that was hard to avoid.

Corporal punishment survey

Hi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.

Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.

School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.

If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.

Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.

The PE teacher who saw my bad behaviour came over to the long-jump pit and gave me four hard slaps across the backs of my legs. He then ordered me to get changed, collect the book and the cane, and wait at the top of the stairs facing the wall. (The teaching staff used the school cane which was kept in the school secretary’s office along with the punishment book. A boy who was to be punished had to collect the book and the cane, and then wait at the top of the stairs outside the teachers‘ common room). I had to wait for over 15 minutes. The waiting was horrible because, a few weeks before, the same teacher had caned a friend of mine. After his caning he told me to make sure that I never got caned by this particular PE teacher. I found out what he meant!

As with my previous caning, I was sent to fetch the book and the cane from the secretary’s office. As well as being caned, I was also given an after school detention in which I had to complete the homework properly. My parents were informed that I would be late home, and later that evening my father questioned me about the incident. He wasn’t pleased that I had dared to produce such shoddy work, and he said that the caning I’d received had been too lenient. He then marched me off to my bedroom, made me bend over a chair and caned me six times across my bottom, which, he said, was the caning that ahould have been administered at the school. The caning I got on my bottom hurt me far more than the caning I got on my hands.

In reading stories on this subject, I am reminded of the games I played involving spanking. In primary school, it was “house” or “school.” I was always the oldest in the group so was chosen as the spanker. I fit in well with those a year or more my junior due to my short stature. The kids idolized me and enjoyed the warmth of my lap while getting spanked.
These games rarely took place in the open due to the fact that in my time, modesty was practiced and immodesty was punished so had to play in secluded places.
In boarding school, the kids who lived on campus lived in a boarding house with a couple who served as “parents” to the boarders. This was a small school so everyone knew everyone else.
The dormitory had a great porch that surrounded the home on each side where we enjoyed playing these games. All spankings were given over the knee by the dorm parents and most kids were also spanked that way at home so that is the position we used in our play.
The spanking area was several yards from the rest of the play area so it would seem like a separate room, though in view of the rest of the participants.
Dresses/skirts were required outfits for girls so added more enjoyment to the experience. Since baring bottoms was taboo, we would have to resist the temptation to do so. We just spanked over clothes.
When the group was smaller, we would either go to the back of the porch or find a more secluded place to play so we could bare bottoms. We played in the den (activity room) or behind a book case which separated the play area and the TV sitting area of the dorm. There were two buildings on opposite ends of the campus where we used to play behind.
The dorm was separated into a boys side and a girls side. Either was off limits to the other so we couldn’t play in any of the rooms since the games always involved a mixed group of kids of both genders. For the most part we played on the porch.
I always enjoyed the view of panties or briefs against the pale skin and developed a hankering for spanking knickers and struggled with how to accomplish this without getting caught or tattled on. In time I figured it out!
I would position the chair I sat in for the spankings so that only the head would be seen by the other participants when the child was over my knee. For girls the process was simple. I would spank English style (though I didn’t know about it till many years later) by moving my hand slightly upwards as it landed on the bottom. After about 8-10 swats, I had a nice view of the panties and finished the spanking (10-12 more spanks) to the knickers! I never got caught and the girls were either oblivious to it or were and didn’t say anything. I attempted to figure out a way to spank the bottoms bare but I knew that would be an impossibility since they would be wise to it and probably either resist and/or tattle on me for it since baring was not tolerated.
For boys, this trick would not be possible so I usually took their pants/shorts down when we played in my private room which was downstairs while the other rooms were upstairs. There was one boy who enjoyed the game so much that we never acted out any scenario we both just would enjoy the experience with him over my knee and my enjoying having him there and delivering innumerable swats to his knickers. On occasion, he would ask me to lower his undergarments to spank is very pale bare bottom.
There was also a girl who was 7 and I was 9 when she and I played together. We couldn’t play in my room so we would do it in the TV area behind the book case since some people passed through the den from the dinning room to go outside to the playground.
She, too, always enjoyed being spanked over my knee. She told me she was always spanked bare and wanted our play spankings to be that way. We enjoyed each other’s company and continued our games for two years.
I’ve been a spanko for a half century now and still enjoy reading and writing about childhood spanking games and hope to write more stories on this and other sites. It was not a serious fight just a push and shove and rolling round on the floor but it soon attracted a crowd of cheering kids,i remember being dragged up by Mrs Waring and being tucked under her arm and my bottom and legs being smacked,the same happened to the other boy.We were then both taken to the headmaster
and made to wait outside his study while Mrs Waring informed him of our behavior.Irecall the door opening and Mrs Waring grabbing me by the ear and marching me into the headmaster,he was sat on a chair at the front of his desk,i had to take down my trousers and bend over the headmasters knee,i was severely spanked, the pain was unbearable i recall howling and crying,after my spanking Mrs Waring took me to the corner and i had to stand facing the wall hands on head with my trousers still down while she brought in the other boy to go over the heads knee,there were tears and howling again and he was put in the other corner till the end of playtime.I remember the headmaster and Mrs Waring having a cup of tea together whilst we were in the corner

Thank you very much for your extremely comprehensive answers to the survey. I fully understand and agree with your decision not to identify your schools or the town. However, given that practices varied so much from state to state in Australia, it would be interesting to know which state and system ie public, catholic or private. Any other memories that you are able to relate would also be interesting.

You certainly experienced a wide range of regimes in different countries. The spanking for a whole class of 6 year olds sounds extraordinary. The idea of getting a whole older class in to hold them even weirder.

You said in the “Ready” thread:

A couple of times I crocodiled (that’s what we called it) with a group of other kids who were all in trouble being lead by a teacher down the street past all of these ordinary people who were just shopping and I think some of us must have known what was going to happen to the miserable children who were passing them sometimes with some of us in tears, especially on the way back. It feels rather surreal in retrospect.

This whole thing sounds incredibly inefficient and almost sadistic. Surely something better could have been organised.

In England, my first school was a Church of England primary in Cambridgeshire. In Scotland I was at a state school in St Andrews.

Once we moved to Australia we were living in country Victoria. My primary school (where I got the strap) was in a very small town (a few hundred people), but my secondary school was in one of the larger rural towns (more than ten thousand). My primary school was a state school, my secondary school was a non-Catholic private school. It’s well enough known that if I gave more details it would not be hard for somebody work it out, especially if they were local.

The punishment at my first school was unusual. I do remember my teacher spanking children a few other times, but nothing else like this happened. I wish I could remember why it happened. I’ve been trying to and I am now wondering if I even knew at the time why we were in trouble.

The travelling between the two different school buildings at secondary school was very inefficient in retrospect. I doubt it was deliberately sadistic, I think it was just that nobody had thought of a better way. The Headmaster was based at the senior school, so if you had to see him, you had to go there, and we had to move between the two for other reasons as well, but he used to visit the junior school regularly. I have this image of him in my head walking the street between the two schools carrying his cane, but it’s probably more likely he drove and probably had canes at both schools. I still have the image in my head though.

I like the vision of the HM marching down the street cane in hand but it is somewhat unlikely. HM Ing of Bacon’s in SE London (much discussed in this forum) wore academic dress and carried his cane in the sleeve.

I think you and the Principal of your primary school were very unlucky that he was reported and the events got back to your father. Perhaps the other girl told her parents. Despite it being against the rules, CP being given to primary school girls may not have been that unusual in Victoria. See this thread for three examples from biographies (posts dated from December 3 2012).

One more question – only answer it if you wish. Why did you cut the pictures out of the library book ?

I think my Principal was reported by one of the teachers at the school, probably my class teacher who seemed upset that I had got the strap – she didn’t seem to believe in it for boys either and thought we all should have been suspended. My father found out because when people came to investigate it my parents were told about the investigation.

Girls got smacked at that school sometimes, although I didn’t. I saw it happen a couple of times in my Grade 5 class (my Grade 6 teacher didn’t even smack the boys), but as far as I know I was the only girl who got the strap.

One of the girls in my Form did work as a photographic model sometimes and she had been a model for a shop catalogue where she had appeared wearing only underwear. This had lead to some of the boys teasing her. I was a library monitor and I was looking through one of the sex education books we had in the library and I came across a completely naked photograph of a girl that I thought was her. I couldn’t be certain because if it was her, it was when she was younger but the book was Australian and it was about the right age. Even if it wasn’t her, other people would have thought it was and she would have been teased just as much. There was a whole class set of these books. So I cut out the naked pictures in the books – all of them, not just the one I thought was her because I thought that would make it too obvious, and threw them away. Unfortunately some of them got out – not the ones of her as far as I know, ones of an older woman – they must have been found in the rubbish and this lead to the vandalism being detected and I got six of the best and my parents got a bill to pay for two dozen sex education books and I was not allowed to be a library monitor anymore. I think the teachers decided that I’d cut the pictures out to sell them or something like that. It was treated as very very bad behaviour, but the Headmaster also seemed totally embarrassed to discuss it and I didn’t want to either, so I paid a high price for it. But I felt it was worth it. Almost, anyway – I was glad I’d done it, but I really wished I hadn’t been caught. I told my father I had been trying to preserve the morality of the other children but I was surprised to find out he was actually in favour of good sex education and didn’t see anything wrong with naked photos in that type of context. It was not a good week for me.

Thank you very much for your answer about the library books. I hadn’t expected that. It explains why you said you would do it again. You were trying to do the right thing, although your method was unwise. It is a pity that you did not feel able to explain your reasons to anyone. It is also unfortunate that neither the Head or the Deputy pressed you for an explanation, but that was not the way at that time. I have to concede that given the information they had, it is hard to see how the school could have acted otherwise. I was also a school librarian, but we definitely didn’t have any books remotely like that in our school library in the 1960s.

I was wondering if you had any further thoughts about your school experiences. I think it is fair to say that hiding from the Head and smoking at the swimming pool would have been seen as provocative actions. Headmasters did not tend to be patient people. One can only imagine his apoplexy whilst waiting outside the girls’ toilets for you to emerge.
