Hi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.

Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.

School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.

If I had 3 layers of protection would that not have been more than a boy who was caned over his trousered bottom wearing just his underpants underneath so maybe I did have more protection in my case.

Well I suppose I was mentally discounting tights, as I thought they would be too insubstantial to provide any real protection. But were the tights you wore at school in those days a bit thicker?

The tights I wore were quite thick so wearing them did provide more protection than just being caned over 2 layers ie skirt and knickers.

In that case, I think your headmistress should definitely have lifted your skirt out of the way! Did all the girls at your school wear tights like that? If so, I should think the boys that were caned over just two layers felt a bit hard done by!

In retrospect do you feel the punishments were too harsh or in line with the school rules and what was expected to maintain the good image of the school. Were girls caned throughout the school to the V1th form?

I certainly consider my punishment harsh but there were strict rules and if you disobeyed them then you had to pay the consequences. I think it was rare for a sixth former to be caned but certainly there were lots of girls caned in other years. There was definitely a caning culture prevalent.

I suppose smoking would have been the most likely offence for which sixth-formers would be caned?

As caning was so prevalent in your school, do you know whether the headmistress kept different types of canes for girls of different ages – maybe a lighter “junior” cane for younger girls and a heavier “senior” cane for older girls? And can you remember whether the cane you experienced was straight or crook-handled? I always thought a crook-handled cane had an extra “aura” somehow!

One must always remember that teachers and indeed heads can over-react to a situation which they may later regret but obviously not admit to the pupil for fear of loosing ‘face’ or authority. Certainly your Headmistress sounds rather a dragon, and indeed corporal punishment may have been what she was used to when she was at school? However the ‘crime’ you were sentence for committing could be seen by any head, to use the educational expression as ‘bringing the school into disrepute’. In retrospect it is too easy to say you should have ignored the workman’s remarks or even said in reply ‘I will tell my teacher’ and walk on smartly. Had you said this I hardly think your Headmistress or teacher could have objected, and if they did it would have been a matter for parents to intervene. Obviously your remark or reply must have been, I suspect, something one may not have said in polite company, or am I exaggerating? If of course it was deemed to be rude or even obscene then I suppose many a head back in the 70s would have had no hesitation in inviting you to bend over a chair for ‘three of the best’ even if it were a momentary lapse from hitherto good behaviour.

The fact that you were able to avoid the cane thereafter in a school where you admit it was used frequently, suggest you were normally a very well behaved pupil. I know from my own experience of schooldays that a momentary lapse could bring painful retribution which seemed rather unfair and harsh at the time.

Yes being caught smoking was always a guaranteed caning so it would not matter what year you were in. Also I believe that there were different canes for junior and senior girls. My experience was with the junior cane as I was in the 3rd year and it was a crook handled cane as well.
