Hi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.

Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.

School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.

If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.

Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. Eighteen or not made no difference. Several of us were paddled in May 1974 for the skipping incident and I believe only one was still seventeen.

The paddling of girls was nothing unusual my my alma mater. My girlfriend and future wife turned eighteen in February, 1974. About a month later she got into a shoving match with another girl who lost her balance and fell. Fighting was a major issue and she was offered the choice of five nights after school detention or three spanks. At the time she had an afternoon job over at the Red Owl grocery store and detention would interfere with that so she ended up taking the paddle. She had taken corporal punishment once before from our V.P. and once in phy ed class so she knew what was coming. I heard from her and other girls that the vice principal didn’t hold back one bit in dishing out swats to young ladies. Guy or girl, he intended a paddling to sting and it did.

The paddle used in our group punishment was about 24″ long and 4″ wide and made from some sort of hardwood. The handle was wrapped in black tape. There were five guys and three girls and we were all smacked with the same one. Yes, it hurt on our butts but it probably hurt our pride just as much. Back then in our blue collar – redneck community you weren’t considered a “real” adult until 21. The hardwood paddle laid across your bottom at eighteen served as a tough reminder you were “still just a kid.”

My parents divorced when I was two and dad wasn’t in the picture. However, on more than one occasion when I was a teenager my mom called in her brother, my uncle Marty, to take care of discipline problems. Mom made it very clear to me when I was 14 that if I ever took a suspension to get out of a paddling, Uncle Marty’s cowhide strap at home was going to hurt a lot worse than the paddle. So I could say that memories of Marty’s strap were a very strong incentive to bend over for that final licking from Vice Principal Larson!

Thanks for your response. Back in the 70’s, it seems that corporal punishment of girls was much more commonplace in US schools than UK schools, at least in certain parts of the US. In many mixed-sex UK schools, it was quite usual for boys to be slippered or caned while girls were just given lines or detentions. In other cases, girls might be caned only on the hands whereas boys would be caned on the bottom (although some thought being caned on the hands was actually more painful than on the bottom!) or girls might only be slippered while boys would be caned. There was certainly a culture in the UK that treated the two sexes differently when it came to corporal punishment in schools, whereas that doesn’t seem to have been true in the US.

In that group paddling that you described, were any of the girls wearing skirts rather than jeans? If so, were they just paddled over their skirts or did they have to lift their skirts up to be paddled over their underwear? With a paddle, it’s quite important to make sure it doesn’t strike the bottom too high up as that could cause injury, and I would have thought a skirt might rather obscure the target area and make it difficult to be sure where to aim it.

The way I remember it 42 years later is that two of the girls were wearing jeans and one had on a pair of red or orange shorts.

We were lined up in no particular order and I was second in line. Standing just behind me was the young lady with the shorts, Cheryl B., the only one short of eighteen. (Her 18th birthday was May 31st, also the day of our graduation.) She appeared very nervous and was biting her lower lip. The first guy was getting his spanks and Cheryl shook her head slightly and said in a low voice something like “I don’t want this” or maybe “I don’t wanna.” Mr. Larson called me by name and it was my turn. I hardly required any instruction on what to do. I took our my wallet and laid it on his desk, bent down with legs spread and slightly thrust my butt out. I took my spanks, gritted my teeth and tried to let on it didn’t sting! Larson said “All right – get up.” I got up and walked to one side.

Larson told Cheryl to “Come on” and she took the paddle without too much fuss as did all of us. Of the three girls, one, Deb B., started crying pretty hard when she got maybe the 3rd spank. She tried standing up but Larson yelled to stay down. He said something else in a lower voice which I couldn’t make out. When Deb was done she was very red faced and sobbing when she walked back to our group.

While all this was going on, Larson’s secretary, a Mrs. Shaw, was acting as witness and looked just completely indifferent, like ho-hum.

The last girl was Donna S. who had definitely been paddled at least twice before, once in 9th grade and once at the end of 11th the previous year. Donna let out a couple of little whimpers and a loud “OUCH!” Her eyes were wet but she managed a little smile when she walked back to join the rest. Then Larson launched into another nasty toned lecture and we were ordered back to class.

This happened first period, about 8:30 a.m. Two of the other guys were in my phy-ed class that afternoon, and in the showers we of course saw each others butts: red and bruised. About 4:00 that afternoon my girlfriend Jill took a look and she said “Wow” and “That had to hurt.” (It did.) My ass was sore three or four days and I had a good welt on the lower part of my right butt cheek. Anyone who ever got a welt knows that once the healing process starts, the welt itches like crazy. Even when your spanked rump goes from sore to tender, the itch adds an element of punishment that goes on punishing.

Jill’s mom, my future mother in law, apparently asked Jill how I had taken in and said “Did he cry?” She didn’t ask this in a nasty way, but she did think it was okay our group had gotten spanks for playing hookey.

When this happened, 1974, it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. In fact, it was something in keeping with the beliefs and values of the community in that day. Unlike today, it didn’t excite any news commentary, lawsuits or bellyaching to authorities. Eight high school seniors deliberately disobeyed, wrongly thought they were too close to graduation for it to matter, and were taught different. And that was that.

I don’t recall you contributing here before so may I please say a personal welcome to the Forum. From the data you have given we appear to be of an age, and It was certainly the case that in our time at school some schools wielded the cane rather frequently. It would appear that yours was possibly one of them! I was fortunate enough to escape the cane, as it was not used at my Junior School and for the most part only be the Prefects at secondary school. A little concentration and common sense enabled one to stay clear of the Prefects’ Court Sessions, and I largely did.

As you say that you were caned many times I presume that you did not find this punishment much of a deterrent. Was this a common attitude at your school please?</div>

Reason. Caught in town with boyfriend when I should have been doing English revision. Two previous warnings had been given.
The punishment. 6 strokes of the cane administered by the headmaster

The school. The school was private in England.
Effectiveness of punishment. The canings I and others at my school received were effective but not brutal. I never heard of anyone complaining and I certainly have no regrets.

Any other relevant info: I wore two pairs of sports shorts under my trousers as padding this was noticed by the Headmistress as she tapped my bottom with her cane. She asked me to stand up and lower my trousers, she then told me she’d seen this trick before and asked me to lower my sports shorts. With both pairs around my knees and my thumbs inside my underwear about to bare my bottom, more for a dare than anything she quickly told me that wouldn’t be necessary and to bend over. I got six of the very best couldn’t believe how hard she caned the swishing sound was vicious.

Any other relevant info: I had decided to wear two pairs of sports shorts under my trousers as padding, this was noticed I was then asked to lower my trousers and then shorts. In my panic and embarrassment my underwear came down with my shorts. They were tangled with my shorts and it seemed easier to just bend over the desk. I was told to pull my pants over my bottom before bending over.

Corporal punishment survey

Hi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.

Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.

School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.

If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.

Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.
