Corporal punishment surveyHi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.

I have no idea I’m afraid of your air gap theory as our head concentrated in caning us across a narrow area as I have indicated. She was a remarkably good shot and the marks would all be very close together which made it more painful when the cane hit the same place more than once. Apparently some teachers in the old days would actually chalk the cane so as to give them a target so they could land on the same place each time! Our head didn’t do that but as I say she was an expert at handling the cane and after she finished your bottom felt as if it had been branded with a hot iron. The marks certainly hung around for a few days after.

Thanks for your response. My “air gap theory” is simply founded on a belief that a typical school skirt would not be absolutely tight against the lower part of the bottom when bending over a desk from a standing position. There would be a slight gap between the skirt and that part of the bottom. As a cane is quite a lightweight implement (even though it’s capable of producing agonising pain!), any gap would be enough to seriously impede a cane stroke directed to that area.
It certainly seems that your headmistress was indeed an expert in wielding the cane to maximum effect though. It requires a lot of skill to give six hard cane strokes all close together on the same area. Nevertheless I think you would have found it even worse if the head had been able to give those six strokes all lower down near your crease area!
Incidentally you didn’t mention whether your mother checked the state of your bottom after your school canings to see how severely you’d been caned. Did she do that?

Hi Keith!
Our head was certainly an expert with the cane, but as she told us, she’d had a lot of practice over the years and got it down to a fine art. Mum did make an informal check of my bum when I was younger. She also gave me some cold cream to rub on it. I found out years later she had found it effective when she had been caned at school! But she didn’t tell me at the time!

Any other relevant info: I was cheeky to a female teacher who sent me outside of the class. I was caught by the senior mistress who decided I should be caned and told me to wait outside her office. At the end of the lesson she appearred with the teacher I cheeked. Six of the very best followed.

I had forgotten my homework so ran back to get it and this resulted in me being late. When I entered the school I was stopped by one of the teachers and sent to wait outside the headmaster’s office. I was in a line of about 4 pupils. When the head arrived he announced that he was fed up with pupils being late and we were all going to be caned. I was last in the queue and heard each previous caning. I also watched the other boys come out in tears. I was called in and told to remove my blazer and bend over the back of a chair. I got 6 strokes which left me in tears.

I got 3 detentions in the term and I was told to report to the deputy headmaster. I was called in and given a lecture before he announced that I was to be caned. I got 4 strokes and warned that I would get 6 if I got another detention that term.

I was told to see the teacher at the end of the lesson which was just before morning break. She gave me a lecture and told me that I could either accept her caning me or be sent to the head. Having felt his caning on one occassion I took her option. She told me to folow her to the large cupboard at the back of the class and then told me to remove my blazer and bend over a stool. She gave me 6 strokes because I was a repeat offender. I was dismissed with a warning that I would be sent to the head for any future offence.

I was warned about talking in class but contined and got caught passing a note to a girl.I was told to stand outside the door until the end of the lesson. I was then called in and told I could either accept a detention or a caning from her. Alternatively I could be sent to the head. I already had 2 detentions that term so I knew I would be caned by the deputy head if I took that option so I accepted her caning. She walked to the cupboard and returned carrying a cane. I was ordered to remove my blazer and bend over the a desk. She gave me 3 strokes.

I was seen smoking on the way home by my form teacher. The next day she told me to report to her after registration. She told me she had seen me in uniform smoking while walking home. She confiscated my cigarettes and told me that she should send me to the headmaster but she was willing to punish me herself if I agreed. I agreed and was told to report to her at the end of school. I reported to her in our form room and she was already completing the punishment book and the cane was on her desk. I was told to bend over and touch my toes. She then lifted my blazer out of the way and gave me 6 strokes. I was told that any future smoking offences would result in a visit to the headmaster and dismissed.
Corporal punishment surveyHi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.
Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.
School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.
If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.
Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.

It was a cold day and some friends and I sneaked into a classroom and were sat around a heater warming up. We got caught by the headmistress who told us to follow her. When we got to her office she read the riot act to us and told us that she was going to cane us all. She told us to wait by the back wall and called the first girl out. She gave her 1 stroke on each hand and then told her to stand back by the wall. The second girl followed and so did 2 other boys before I was called out. I was shocked at the pain and found it difficult to hold out my second hand for the second stroke. Eventually we had all been caned and were told to go and stand in the playground with our hands on our heads until the end of lunchtime. We were warned that we would get extra if we moved.
