(Boring post warning!!)

This explanation by Julian Thompson: “Most London trams used a magnetic brake for service stops.  With the controller handle on the brake notches, the motors acted as dynamos, energising track brake shoes suspended just above the rails.  The backward drag of the magnets actuated brake blocks on the driving wheels.”

The single picture isn’t very clear, but London trams worked partly with power from overhead wires and partly with a shoe or “plough” that was in a third rail.  There were manned change points between the systems at various places such as depots and I think the activity we see and the objects on the track may be to do with that.

The pollution caused by diesel engines was different from that of power stations was because it was emitted at ground level.  Our ancestry is similar and my grandfathers also spent time working as coal hewers in the mines, so I appreciate the downside of coal, but are you suggesting that oil refineries put no noxious by-products into the environment?

Here is a view from the window of my lodgings in Zurich.  You probably wouldn’t like it!  There are also trolleybuses, which are much quieter, that pass along the same street, but I can’t find a picture that includes them.   Even as a tram admirer, I admit they are noisy and there have been times when I have cursed them at 5.30 am!

It is my duty to educate, inform and entertain…  You can’t work for years at the Bletchley Biscuit Company (Shepherds Bush Branch) without coming under its influence.

Trams seem to be coming back in many UK cities. With the current down on fossil fuels, petrol and diesel, they may possibly increase more. No sign of any trolley buses returning though?

Any other relevant info: My first experience of corporal punishment at secondary school. Had been daring myself to get in enough trouble to get the strap since the start of term. I had butterflies in my stomach as I watched the strap hurtling towards my outstretched palm, but was also very excited. It stung, but not too bad.

Any other relevant info: This was less than a week after my first time. As well as giving me double the number of strokes, he put a lot more effort into it. It stung and hurt much more than the first time. Still very excited by the whole thing.

Any other relevant info: This was the only teacher at the school who caned boys, and I was one of the few to get it. I carried on messing about during his lesson despite being told several times not to. Eventually he lost his rag, hauled me to the front of the class and made me bend over. Was quite taken aback how much it hurt compared to the strap. Minor celebrity for a while with classmates wanting to see the cane marks at the next break.

Any other relevant info: I was on the school sponsored walk on one of the last Fridays of the summer term and was thirsty. I saw a pint of milk on the doorstep of a house we were passing and decided to help myself. I was seen taking the milk and told to report to the Deputy Headmaster first thing on Monday morning. I had all weekend to consider my fate. I knew I was going to get the strap and assumed that 4 was the minimum, but 6 was much more likely. That concerned me, but not nearly as much as that the school might inform my parents. I went to the deputy head’s office first thing on Monday morning and joined the other 11 schoolboys who had been told to report. We got a severe bollocking about our crimes (stealing, smoking and fighting) and he told us we were all going to get 6. He clearly meant business, and removed his jacket and rolled his sleeves up before giving 2 3rd years 6 of the strap for fighting, followed by 8 smokers who got the same. I was called up next, and was very nervous having already seen 10 schoolboys get 6 of the best, but I was also very excited again. It had been at least 6 months since I last had the strap, and I was mesmerised as I watched the strap swing from over his shoulder onto my outstretched palm. I alternated hands after each stroke and it took all my bravery to raise my hands for the third stroke on each hand. It really hurt, but I managed to maintain my composure. This was my last corporal punishment in the 2nd year.

Any other relevant info:At the parents of new pupils evening after you had passed the 11 plus exam, the Headmaster addressed the parents and at the end he produced his cane and told them that he enforced all rules by caning.He stressed apparently that it was “a caning school,” and parents who did not accept the possibility of their boy receiving a caning could withdraw their child now.

vernon6 cannot say caning served much purpose far as you where concerned as you seem to  bring it on yourself on quiet regular at school and lesson did not  seemed learned with you
