I had never heard of UK SCP being given across the bare bottom when I was a lad. I believe I have read of Eton birchings being given that way but that would have been a totally different world to the one I grew up in. Back then I knew no one who went to a private school let alone a public school. I saw and received canings and slipperings at my grammar school. It was the accepted way of punishing lads in school back then. Mine was a boys only school. I knew very little of the local girls schools although I think that I knew that girls could be caned across their hands in some schools.
Spankings from parents was a very different matter. The relationship between parents and their children was very different back then. Some parents did what they’d had from their own parents. Some did nothing at all because they remembered hating it when they’d been spanked years before. Home spankings were not just for boys, plenty of girls were spanked too. Some girls, even in their early teens, were spanked by either of their parents. I remember an early girlfriend fearing being home late in the evenings. I said something like surely her parents weren’t that awful and she then confided that she risked a spanking from her dad if she was late home twice in a week.
Boys at school told of being spanked at home. I was sometimes spanked on my bare bottom at home but never told others of it, far too embarrassed!

I don’t think the trousers down thing happened in real life, except maybe in PE lessons….
There was definitely something in English culture — TV and comics and school stories — which said that “bending over” was the natural and normal way of being punished in school. Especially by the headmaster. (In Only Fools and Horses they mention that Del Boy’s old headmaster was nick-named Bend-Over Brown). It was almost as if bottoms were only there to be caned. Maybe that made it seem less shameful?
Was there a similar thing in Scottish culture where “hands” were there to be strapped and “hold you hand out” seemed like the natural way of getting punished?

I was always intrigued when other lads talked being spanked at home, something that I’d never have admitted to getting myself.
Do you think that bending over and getting six of the best in the headmaster’s study was seen as a “manly” or “macho” punishment – something you could be quite proud of and boast about afterwards? But being spanked or slippered across your Dad’s knee, seemed “babyish” and as a source of shame? I can imagine someone boasting about getting the belt at home; but that seemed to have completely died out by the time I was at school. (It was often given as a reason for banning school CP: “We don’t beat out own kids with belts or sticks, so why should teachers be allowed to?”)

I have to agree that being across dad’s, or mum’s knee for that matter, was somewhat childish. As I remember for most youngsters over knee spanking at home were replaced by the more ‘grown up’ bend over spankings when they were that bit older.
The great advantage of over knee spanking, for parents, was being able to hold the miscreant in place with one hand and to spank with the other. Bare bottom spanking wasn’t unusual and although a bit embarrassing was used by many parents.
The great majority of posts here refer to boys being spanked but plenty of girls were spanked too. I’m not talking of spankings with nasty sexual undertones just those given for purely disciplinary purposes.

Yes, I was only spanked over the knee when I was very young. By the time I was school age I had to take off my own shorts and underpants and bend over. I had assumed that most kids at the time did get spanked at home, both boys and girls, although this wasn’t something we discussed outside the family, but I could gather that they did.

I’d think that many still went over dad or mum’s knee were a fair bit other than that. There were no hard and fast rules about it. Some parents did what they’d themselves had at the same age. Others followed advice from other parents (friends).
I’d imagine that there was sometimes some discussion between a mother and father about how punishments should be given particularly if one had parents that had spanked hard and often and the other had more liberally minded parents.

When I was a lad, 19550s/60s, there was the occasional mention of someone having been spanked at home by their parents. As it was an accepted way of punishing back then they weren’t really pressed for details.
