The paddle seems to be very much the preferred implement in USA schools. When did it first come into widespread use? I am particularly interested in early mentions of the school paddle in dated factual or fictional literature, and in official documents.Have other cultures used the paddle in schools?
Hi KK
Think american Way is correct. Look at the object second from the right in the bottom left hand corner, with the words the price underneath and to the left ?

<div style=”width:100%;background-image:url(/realm/A_L_123/A_L_trg.gif);”>Hi KK, American Way and Prof.n,
Hmm. a tricky one! But I think taking the size of (E) relative to the shoe sole? (G) and the cane? (C) it is probably too wide relative to its length to be a barrel stave pre-bending. So a shingle – or a short floorboard with nails still extant!
But KK said:
A shingle may be a precursor of the paddle, but is it actually a paddle? IMHO no, so KK is probably correct in his assertion.</div>

The following excerpt is reproduced here solely for historical research purposes. It should not be read by those who are <s>easily titillated</s> offended by allusions to unsavoury matters, or by EAL.
The Ogden Standard (Utah), August 26, 1916

“Spanking used to be so universal that it was commonly used in girls’ boarding schools. In one I know of the punishment was inflicted once a week. At that time all the girls who had been naughty and adjudged deserving of a spanking were ordered to report in the principal’s office at a certain time. They were to wear nothing but a simple knee length gingham dress and shoes. Generally, the hour would see about a dozen terrified girls of 7 to 14 years old in the room. The ‘spanker’ would enter with her paddle, made from a shingle, call the roll of the ‘spankees’ majestically, and proceed to work.
“The girls were spanked according to age, the oldest first, that their humiliation might be seen by all the others. You can imagine what the girls felt who were awaiting their spanking in seeing the punishment indicted upon the others and knowing that they were to receive it in their turn. As the name was called the culprit rose and went to the principal, who read the crime, and leaning the sinner across her knee raised the one garment and inflicted the spanks on the bare hips of the offender. It was not severe, but enough to prevent a repetition of the transgression.

Hi <strong>KK</strong>, that is a very nice find!
I don’t know if this is meaningful or not, but notice your ad is from 1911, and the Cypress shingle ad, seen here, similarly promotes the use of a shingle and is dated 1913. This begs the question, “Was this pure coincidence, or was there a real culrutal trend in using shingles for spanking ca.1910?”

I agree KK a good find. That’s a compliment coming from me. And I owe so much from you hints for archival research. You thanked me already for pulling up the word “shingle”. The costuming in the add seem peculiar for that time in Texas for what difference it may make.

Did paddles come to be favoured in the USA in part because of a greater availability of precursors, especially in rural areas there?
Leather is likely to have been readily available in areas where cattle were common. It was an important material in the age of horse power and before rubber and composites became available. Were there fewer cattle and therefore less leather in the paddling states?
Rattan was imported into the USA in large quantities but may not have been readily available in the interior away from ports and railways (see posting above November 27, 2012)
Settlers moving into a new area had an urgent need to construct shelters. In most cases, they had to construct those shelters from the materials to hand as it was not practical to transport building materials long distances in the absence of navigable waterways, railways and roads. In addition, the settlers often lacked the money to buy construction materials.
Timber and stone were common building materials with thatched, shingle or slate roofs. In forested areas, timber was readily available and much used. Shingles were commonly used to clad walls and roofs in rural areas but were less used in the coastal cities or for more substantial buildings.
Wood was used to make household items like butter paddles, spoons and plates in the absence of affordable ceramics. Wood was also used to construct both tight (waterproof) and general purpose barrels for the storage and transport of a great diversity of products including beer, sugar, apples, etc. Barrel staves were widely available.
Those in areas that favoured the paddle certainly had ready access to precursors. However, it is uncertain whether the paddle precursors were more available, or alternatives less available, than elsewhere.

<div style=”width:100%;background-image:url(/realm/A_L_123/A_L_trg.gif);”>Hi KK,
You said on March 16 2013, 5:39 AM above of the text and picture regarding the paddle wielding lady head of the boarding school for girls:
Well, I’m pleased to see that you don’t lump me in with the easily titillated!
But despite my lack of personal experience of school CP (though I did see it applied to a great many naughty young ladies) you need not seek to protect me from the realities of life in this particular case. I am very familiar with the ‘spanker entering with her paddle’. Despite the considerable personal risk involved I prepared a modified version of it at the specific request of my friend American Way and here it is! Fortunately it seems that Renee doesn’t read that thread. </div>
