Former Home Secretary Alan Johnson told Radio 4 that he was caned on the hand at primary school and on the bottom at Sloane Grammar School, Chelsea for crimes such as being late, wearing red socks and having long hair. All caneable offences in my view but not on the hand.
He has previously described caning as barbaric but made no such comment in this programme.

He made some interesting comments in that programme on the impact of 60’s and 70’s left wing liberalism on the quality of education.

The school discussed in Alan Johnson’s series (but not attended by him) was called Archbishop Michael Ramsey Comprehensive in one of its incarnations. A contributor to its website Peter John asks “Go on then. Did any of you manage to get the cane, slipper or belt when you were at Ramsey? What years? How many? What for? Was it on the hand or ar se?” He even includes photographs of a strap, tawse and cane being applied to hands and the sole of a plimsoll.   Despite these helpful hints, none of the 4 replies is affirmative.

Now I smell a rat! Unless Peter John went the same school as me he is putting the same message on various Facebook sites. The same set of pictures and the same type of message are on a West Country school Facebook page.

It was suspicious that he didn’t name any pupils or teachers he remembered, and his questions are rather too specific.

The tactic you both mention is commonly employed by what I sometimes refer to as ‘Earnest seekers after the truth’ {about SCP}.  A notorious example occurred on the now defunct Friends Reunited site where a (fe)male posted on the Bacons school page calling themselves Zoe Marshall 1975 and saying:

The Cane – Hi, I dont suppose anybody remembers me but I have a question, I was caned by the Headmaster in 1973, can you tell me his name? I have forgotten it, and also I was caned on my bottom, I have often wondered if I am the only girl who was caned on the bum, it really hurt.

They failed to elicit any responses and, as much discussed here, evidence of girls caned on the bottom at Bacons School is pretty scarce.  If indeed you were such a girl could you possibly forget the name of the man who did the deed?  The only other female I know of  whose posting suggested that she might have been so caned certainly remembered the headmaster’s name and went into some detail as to why his mood might have been such as to lead to him caning her.

There can be no doubt about Peter John being a fraud. He posted in my old school Facebook page last summer:

Go on then, who managed to get the cane or slipper while you were at xxxxxxxx back in the day? What years did you attend? What did you get it for? How many? Who from? Was it on the hands or arse? ‘Fess up! LOL. Tag your mates in the reply if you know they got it then they can fess up too lol

Half a dozen people made a few comments but nothing of real interest and he was soon forgotten.He uses stock photos of the cane and slipper.

Sportsmen and Celebrities Paddled at School 

I am interested in any accounts of celebs who were paddled at school, especially in the period before about 1950, as part of my study of the US school paddle.
