Megan looked at Anna. Anna looked at Ted. Ted looked at Ron. It was a tense, awkward moment that seemed to stretch itself out indefinitely. Megan began to feel as if her coming here was a mistake. She told herself that she and Ted could still be friends, but he hardly paid her any attention. She knew it wasn’t his fault, nor did she blame Anna, but the fact remained that she felt left out. She hated feeling left out.
“Great,” she whispered cynically. She didn’t think anyone heard. Not that she cared at this point…
Bowling helped take the tension away. Megan remembered bowling with Ted was always an adventure. She was so bad that she once rolled a spare…in an adjacent lane. Ted used to have to physically adjust her stance at the line. Now it was Anna who was in need of the most help. She was spending more time in the gutter than wet leaves.
“Make sure you’re looking straight ahead,” Ron advised when Megan stepped up to the line.
“Oh. Thanks.” She didn’t want any tips from him.
