However, all instances of “corridoring” were recorded and if you were sent out three times in the course of a week, you could be sent for the cane.

In my case one Friday late in my first term at the school I made the mistake of flicking an elastic band at someone and was sent out. Only then did I realise that it was the third such sending out that term, and what that would mean.

Later that day my form master told me that he had reported me and that I would have to see the headmaster after assembly on Monday.

All weekend I was worried about what was going to happen and on Monday morning I was more careful than usual to make sure that I was wearing the correct school uniform.

In assembly I sat in a seat at the end of the row, so as to be able to leave when my name was called out. Then I noticed that the headmaster was not in his usual place on the stage. I started to think that I might escape, or at least gain a reprieve.
