My best friend, Maureen, slipped back one place in line to join me, and she said, “Brenda, that was really dumb. Do you know how much trouble you could have gotten into?” She was right, of course. I shouldn’t have let Linda talk me into disobeying Mother Frances. But at least I hadn’t been caught. I vowed to myself never to do it again. That evening wasn’t memorable. I assume that we had spaghetti for supper, since it’s what we usually had on Thursdays, and I imagine that I did my homework and watched some television before going to bed. Perhaps I heard the phone ring and my mother answer it right after supper; if so, I can’t remember it.
