If you went to a school that used formal corporal punishment (i.e. not just spur of the moment in the classroom) did they have any offences for which it was the inevitable consequence if you were caught? Serious misbehaviour in my school led to a trip to the headmaster or, more commonly, the deputy headmaster to be given a formal caning on the behind in their office. I came through the English system so I tend to think of caning as being the sanction for serious behaviour issues – if you were in a different tradition then substitute strap, paddle or whatever the weapon of choice was in your experience.
