Being caught in transit between home and school not wearing my school cap would have been the easiest way. With a mile walk from home to bus, a half hour bus journey and a half mile walk to school at the other end and a few privs (sort of deputy prefect) and prefects using part or all of the same route a mere fleeting glimpse from the pavement or from another vehicle of caplessness behind an upper deck window was enough to convict. Three times in a half term would have been sufficient to get caned, probably two strokes the first time, possibly three strokes after that.
