But in an all-male school with hulking great third year sixth form stars of the rugby 1st XV and rowing 1st VIII forming the bulk of those likely to wield the prefects’ cane I certainly didn’t want to be caned by the prefects. An early appearance before the prefects’ court and the sight of the very large cane laid on the court table convinced me of that. Now if it had been a mixed school and a sporting chance of attractive and mini-skirted young lady prefects bound for 1st class degrees at Oxford or Cambridge and top jobs in the Civil Service or Financial Institutions
