Automatic punishments are always ripe for abuse, but come from a seemingly ‘sensible’ place.

This is the theory of policing and law, debated across THOUSANDS of years.

We had one such at my secondary (generic meaning)  school. A playing field led down to the railway track, and obviously the school didn’t want boys getting killed. But do you really dissuade people from breaking the worst rule by promising the worst punishment everytime. Settled, widely accepted research says “no”.

When the method is applied, it is cos idiots or perverts are in charge, or because the authorities seek to play to the “wisdom of the crowd”.
