He was willing to face his wife’s anger, but the idea of sitting helplessly on the floor in his diapers while his mother stood over him shaking her head and telling him how naughty he’d been to fight Mary was too much for him. If he resisted, he’d have to listen to his mother’s scolding for the next ten years telling him how much money he’d lost them by acting truculent. He wouldn’t even be able to argue with her. He’d gurgle and coo his apologies, but it would be too late. It was far better to give in to Mary and let her have the divorce that she demanded. It was the best thing he could do for his family under the circumstances.
