This was a frequent occurrence and the fear and terror I experienced was always the same. The horrifying memory of these ‘torture’ episodes was seeing the action and reaction of this abuse. These incidents would always be a ritual: – Someone has just been singled out in class because they have qualified to receive the cane. They would be ordered to come out in front of the class. Then either they would be marched out into the corridor or made to bend down and ‘touch their toes’ in front of the class. Then the cane would be delivered on their backside. The terrible whack of the weapon hitting the backside was absolutely terrifying.
