I was at St Marks School (Primary), Tunbridge Wells Kent, and the usual punishment was corporal, mainly smacking on the back of the hand (boys & girls) and the cane on the palm, (Boys only) But there was one teacher (All ladies) who did smack the backs of the legs, boys and girls. Boys never wore long trousers in those days! and boys were in skirts or dresses which were below the knee.
This was true, in the 1940;s (48 to 50) I myself only ever got smacked on the hand, though I was expecting to get the cane once, but the cane was not available so I was smacked just the same as the girl who had been called out as well.
