When I was in the second form of my grammar school in the 50s there was an attractive young woman of about 25 who taught us French. She had nasty way of starting a class. Quite often as she entered the room she would notice a couple of pupils not at their desks , fighting, etc and she would immeiately shout their names followed by OUTSIDE THE STAFF ROOM. It happened to me twice. We had to wait there for as long as she cared to make us – sometimes most or all of the lesson. Then she would sweep into the staff room smiling at us on the way. She would emerge carrying a cane and invite us into the sort of vestibule where staff hung their coats . TOUCH YOUR TOES RIGHT DOWN I CANT CANE YOU UNLESS YOUR SHORTS ARE VERY TIGHT . She turned up our blazers, checking our bottoms for extra padding. Three or four hard strokes tore into us, always followed by a sarcastic comment like WILL THAT DO THE TRICK ? or THERE’S SOMETHING TO GO ON WITH.
I heard years later that she went on to become headmistress of a large girls’ school. I often wondered if she continued her iron discipline there and girls’ bottom suffered. Her name was Engledow. Does anybody know of her ? And can they report on what became of her ?
