I too had the misfortune to get caught shoplifting, along with two other girls when I was 15. The shopkeeper called the police and, rather embarrassingly, we were driven back to the school in a patrol car.
This only served to make the headmisstress even more angry, as it brought shame on her school to have three girls “arrested” and brought back in this way.
To her credit, she did mange to talk the shopkeeper out of pressing charges, promising him the matter would be dealt with “severely” by the school, of course 30 years ago this meant only one thing, the cane!
