Actually Summerhill was quite “advanced”for its time in the 1930s
It disdained the flog ’em and bash ’em theory that abounded in most schools of its time.
However, it did have some unsavory aspects like allowing the kids to pretty much express negative feelings or not attend lessons, etc if they so chose.
The hope was to make school a carrot instead of a stick.
One cannot say that it was enormously successful.
From my observations the kids of parents who are in trouble many times the parent’s attitude TO the kids that is the problem.
This attitude from what I’ve seen in public is usually
“I’m the boss. you do what I say. You are my slave property.”
