The girls also claimed that he would frequently enter their dorms when they were undressing for bed, and would sometimes check that the girls were obeying the “no knickers under nightdress” school rule. That rule also was useful when on occasions a girl to be punished was punished at night rather than during the day. The girl to be paddled was fetched from the dorm and so when she was to be spanked, was wearing no knickers. When questioned on this he said that sometimes if he had been engaged during the day, or she had, then this was the opportune time to administer punishment, and that sometimes a girl would remember she had no knickers on, and would put a pair on. Although one witness said that when she asked if she could put on her knickers was told that she wouldn’t be needing any.
