The problem with this subject is that in today’s world these things seem almost impossible to believe. It is had for anyone on the right side of 50 to understand the mindset of both the kids and the teachers in those days.
We thought teachers were the equivalent of God and many of them thought so too!
Although I never heard of anyone being caned or slippered on the bare bottom (other than in the gym where the PT master was far above God in status and could have got away with murder – or so it seemed to us – but if a master had ordered me to take down my pants I’m sure there is no way I would have had the courage to refuse!
This is where younger people part company from the old timers here. They know that a child today would be straight on to Childline, the Sun, and their parents would be off to the cop shop and their friendly no win, no-fee solicitors!
