Firstly, I was a local person and lived in the area. I had attended St Peters as a boy and grew up in the area. I did not live miles away like some heads and was looked upon as strangers or as middle class people trying to enforce their ideals on what were mainly working-class families. The years of depression had caused a hatred of the middle class, but by always being in the area was regarded almost as family. This did make my position at St Peters rather different than that of most heads. At weekends I would be seen having a pint in the local and would attend the local church on Sunday.
