The most important thing, and this seems bad, was to keep discipline in the school and not to teach them. Discipline during the war was the all-important thing. You stated that somebody who uses the cane gets pleasure in doing so. I do not think pleasure was the right word, I felt I had a duty to keep these children in order. As stated by others the war did not only bring out the good in people but also the bad and it was vital children were taught right from wrong. with so many fathers at war, it was the duty of the head to keep up standards of conduct and discipline.
