I wonder if this would have been the case in 1940 with your friend. would she still have managed it with a class that could be as many as 50 boys and with pupils coming and going? would she have managed it faced with the fact that the evacuees were mainly from inner cities where certainly the cane was used a lot and much harder? Given this and the fact that these boys now had a new freedom in the country, i do not think you would have been able to control a class without the use of the cane in the school. You had little time to tak to pupils about what they had done wrong, and coming from schools were the cane was used and this new freedom would have resulted in a breakdown of discipline. it was this breakdown in discipline that was a ig worry but to headteachers and parents alike.
