though I was at school during the war, most of my schooling took place after it (albeit in an environment where the war was still a pretty relevant experience, many of my teachers were returned servicemen and a significant number of my schoolmates had lost their fathers (mine survived the war, but not by that long) and many of those teachers saw themselves as having some sort of duty to take a special role in doing what they could to replace the influence of the men who didn’t come back, even when I started teaching there were still a few boys around who had lost their fathers in the war, as well as the occasional boy who’d lost theirs in the smaller wars since and coupled with the general in loco parentis role we were expected to take, this had an impact, although a 21 year old teacher wasn’t really expected to be that paternal to 16 year old boys).
