Up to morning break
This was always the most busy time of the day, as I never use to know what may occur. I used to arrive at the school at 7.30 ready for the start of school at 8.45.
If the telephones were working, one of the things dreaded the most was to hear it ring before 8 am. This would often mean a teacher could not come in and I would have about 45 minutes to try and find somebody. Ther was no choice. Either I found somebody or would have to take the class myself and catch up after school on all that day’s paperwork. If I had to catch up on the paperwork this could often result in working in the air raid shelter, because we had no blackouts, until 7 pm or later.
