This checking of homework was very important. As the boys often had different teachers it was important to keep up standards. It was also common for boys not to bother to do homework if the teacher that set it was not going to be in school to collect it the next day and had to be handed into to another teacher. Those found guilty were made in turn out the front to drop their trousers and pants (if worn) and bend over.
