My secondary school had a prefect system, and a prefects’ court, which was held weekly on a Wednesday morning, if I remember correctly, during the Tutor Set period when boys of all age groups spent a period with their tutor, who stayed with them throughout the school. Holding the prefects’ court then avoided taking boys out of classes to appear before the court.

The prefects could and sometimes did impose caning as a penalty for offenses that lay within prefectorial jurisdiction. I’ve noted elsewhere that throughout my school career, my one sight of a genuine school cane was the one prominently displayed on the table in front of the solemn conclave of my elders and (in their opinion at least) betters who pronounced judgment on me the one time I fell foul of the prefects.
