I was 13 at the time, and happily my offence only merited lines. I’d been late for a lesson, and hence was running in a quad where running was prohibited. I was even later for the lesson after I’d been stopped and booked by a ‘priv’ (privileged sixth former, a select group of sixth formers who acted as sub-prefects) and ‘booked’ (the process of scribbling your name on a bit of paper, for subsequent transfer into the prefects’ book). Happily, masters were often a lot more understanding than prefects or privs, so I incurred no additional penalty on eventually arriving in class.
