It is probably true to say that most younger boys were far more in awe of prefects and privs than they were of masters. Like masters their authority extended beyond the school and out of school hours, and unlike most of the masters they hadn’t yet achieved the maturity that enabled a blind eye to be turned to some insignificant breaches of the rules. I never made prefect, but I did attain priv for my second year in the sixth form, and though I did a lot of bellowing “stop running” and “put your cap on” at those who hadn’t attained that exalted status, I never booked anyone on principle. I was very liberal minded in those days, how times change!
