I attended Geelong Grammar in the 1950s, and some prefects were allowed to cane there. I was a house prefect (the most junior form of prefect) in my final year, but was not allowed to cane as my house captain refused to delegate the authority. I know that over time the practice became restricted to fewer and fewer prefects, but I don’t believe it died out until the 1970s. Similar applied at Scotch College, where eventually canings could only be administered by the School Captain after a meeting of the prefects.
