Lindsay Anderson’s IF was the film in the mid-1960 which brought a view of English Public School Prefects beatings to a wider audience. Based in part on Anderson’s time at Cheltenham in the 1930s, by the time IF was in the cinemas, many of the older schools had abandoned that sanction. As a pupil at one of these schools in the late 1950s and early 1960s, I was at both ends of the cane as a youngster and subsequently as a Prefect myself.
