Just an interesting note…this was a mixed class and the teacher tended to avoid caning girls – no doubt due to the misconception of the era that girls were too fragile or sensitive. Some injustices were therefore obvious but at that age, I guess we just accepted it as par for the course.
However, on one occasion, the injustice of letting girls go scot free was so blatant that he deputized one of his favorite girls to cane about six or so offenders in front of the class. The offenders stood in a line and the appointed deputy proceeded along the line delivering one stroke to each proffered hand exactly as she’d seen the teacher do it.
