Even in those far-off days, I don’t think a girl at an English secondary school would have been corporeally punished just for being late. I had no idea then what the Scottish version of ‘getting belted’ involved and assumed the worst! I was too shy to request further details, but my foot went down hard on the loud pedal (if you could call it that on a 998cc Ford Anglia and I’m happy to say that we arrived in time to ensure that the young lady’s bottom (or rather, as I later discovered somewhat to my disappointment her hands) would be quite unsullied by any red stripes that day, or at least not for lateness!
