I was surprised because he’d never struck me as all that reticent when he was teaching me, but that surprise made a big impression on me because it was such a shock to me to realize he thought I was overusing the cane and doing a fairly poor job of classroom management. And he let me know this. Thankfully I was still early enough in my career to change (and still young enough to not dare disobey him!), but he gave me a book which he told me to read very carefully, saying it was an excellent new book on common sense discipline. I took it, I read it, and I agree I still regard it over forty-five years later as one of the best books on school discipline I’ve ever read.
