what I mean by realistic in this case is that the punishment seen in Fighting Back is rather similar to what I recall from my own experiences at a Victorian state school in the mid-1940s (I only attended such a school until I was 8). It’s also similar to the strappings I saw during teaching practice in a state tech in 1958. I should point out that the punishment regime in both those schools left a lot to be desired. At my own primary school, the Head used to hand out the strap very readily without any real inquiry as to whether or not you deserved it – most of the time I didn’t – teachers simply sent you to him and he belted you.
