Like a lot of the newer and smaller grammar schools around Melbourne back then, it did it’s absolute best to be a copy of the top Australian and British schools and part of that meant using the cane. They didn’t use it all that often, but when they did, it was fairly severe, especially for young boys. Three or four strokes across the seat of your shorts from your form master was normal. Six of the best from the Headmaster was what everybody really feared.
Then finally I went to my last school and that was a whole new ball game.
