Schoolboy wisdom always held that it was a much less severe form than caning, but I have my doubts about that. I would regard the strapping seen in that clip as an exceptionally severe form of corporal punishment, far more severe than I would hope was ever seen as normal and routine in most schools here, but perhaps on the same level as the most severe canings I experienced as a boy and that I administered – very severe punishment for an exceptional offense in a period where corporal punishment was absolutely routine. Not having seen the film it comes from, I don’t know if the punishment was justified or not, but the idea that liars should receive more severe punishment is certainly one I’m not opposed to (I do make a distinction, though, depending on the reason for the lie –
