My experience was in a school that maintained order by use of a mixed menu of sanctions, including corporal punishment, but that was reserved, as I’ve said before, to senior staff administered in private, never in anger, and never without a serious two-way discussion of the reasons for it. Indeed if a student refused the cane it would never be forced on them, and normally they would be suspended in lieu.Senior students, i n the sixth form had a written right to exemption from the cane unless they specifically waived that right in writing. All of this I think you can find in other postings.
