It was clear I was a prison guard not an educator.
It soon became obvious that with the exception of two examination classes in social science ( that no one else could teach) the rest of my timetable was the ‘dross’   ( what no one else wanted). I just felt sorry for the kids. I couldn’t educate them, but at least we had some interesting discussions about life, and in exchange, they would (mostly) sit in the classroom and not cause trouble! I began to understand their lifestyle, expectations, and aspirations ( or lack of them), which was previously a closed book to me.
