Unfortunately, a few teachers overstep the mark and a couple of recent cases, highlighted on the Internet, are beginning to swing public opinion away from the traditional acceptance of CP and are beginning to undermine the trust parents place in teachers. There is a strong possibility that this is the beginning of the end for school CP in Korea.

My point is that the strongest argument against school corporal punishment is that it is/was sometimes carried out by people without the necessary self-control and judgment to use it fairly. In an age of instant communication, it only needs a couple of bad teachers to destroy the trust and tradition built up over many years. I fear that the bond of trust between parents and teachers was lost many years ago in the UK and I do not see how it will return. Unless parents are really prepared to trust teachers to act “in loco parentis”, as they once did, cp will never return to our schools.
